Description
In response to insecticide resistance and increasing pressure from rapeseed pests, new strategies are emerging: agronomic approaches (trap crops, favorable habitats), biological control, and collective action. This training session presents practical insights for designing effective regional strategies that incorporate beneficial insects and engage farmers in achieving agroecological goals.
On the agenda:
1. Foundations and benefits of collective approaches:
- Introduction to the ecological requirements of several functional groups of beneficial insects (pollinators, flying predators, parasitoid hymenoptera)
- Opportunities offered by collective and regional approaches for the agroecological management of insects (pests and beneficial insects)
- A concrete example of implementing a collaborative management strategy across a 1,300-hectare area facing insect management challenges, involving 10 farmers seeking to move toward a gradual phase-out of insecticide applications
2. Support and evaluation of collective dynamics
- Key success factors and points to watch for in successfully supporting farmers in regional projects for agroecological management of crop pests
- How to evaluate a regional project?
The examples presented will be drawn from our experience in pilot regions and within the framework of multi-year monitoring programs. They will be based on knowledge of the interactions between rapeseed pests and their main natural enemies, parasitoid hymenoptera, as well as on knowledge of the interactions between pollinating insects and plant species.
Training objectives
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Explain the value of collective and regional approaches to managing crop pests and beneficial insects
- Apply the lessons learned from Terres Inovia’s experience in regional projects focused on agroecological pest management
- Use tools, methods, and strategies to successfully support farmers in these types of initiatives
- Identify technical strategies designed to limit insect damage without insecticides that can be applied at the regional level, taking into account their advantages and limitations (managed trap crops, biological control through habitat conservation)
