Description
No-till farming under cover crops (SDCV) involves eliminating tillage and establishing permanent ground cover. It is currently the most advanced form of conservation agriculture.
The agronomic benefits of these techniques are significant, but they only become real and sustainable when farmers master the system. Providing participants with the keys to success in this system is the main focus of this course.
Course outline:
Theoretical component (online):
- Types of cover crops (annual and permanent): species, combinations, agronomic benefits
- Use and presentation of the ACACIA tool
- Development of a coherent technical plan for SDCV
- Rationale for crop rotations
- Establishment, maintenance, and management of cover crops
- Nutrition, weed management, pests, and diseases
- Crop combinations and agronomic performance
- Economic and environmental analysis of SDCV practices
Field component (in-person either in Baziège (31) or in Nièvre (58)):
- Visit to SDCV plots
- Soil profiling and interpretation
- Exchange of best practices
Training objectives
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Explain the agronomic functioning of a no-till system under permanent cover
- Identify suitable plant species based on their objectives and the local soil and climate conditions
- Develop a permanent cover crop strategy tailored to their cropping system;
- Master the key factors for a successful transition to no-till direct seeding under cover (crop rotation, soil fertility, cover crop management, pest management, etc.)
- Assess the economic and environmental impacts of their direct seeding under cover practices
Teaching methods
Hybrid format:
- Online theory (2 half-days): Technical input, case studies, interactive quizzes.
- Fieldwork (1 day): Plot analysis, interpretation of soil profiles, discussions with practicing farmers.
Active methods: Presentations, discussions, Q&A sessions, hands-on exercises.
Assessment: Quizzes, Q&A sessions, individual satisfaction survey, self-assessment.
Teaching resources
Theoretical materials: Lectures, presentations, and written materials provided to participants.
Management tool: Use and presentation for the selection and management of cover crops.
Field visits: Observation and analysis of soil profiles in real-world settings.
Exchange of best practices: Feedback and discussions between participants and trainers
Assessment methods
Quizzes, Q&As, individual satisfaction surveys, self-assessmentAccessibility information
