Design and implementation of a thesaurus of variables for agronomic experimentation
Terres Inovia is required to manage an ever-increasing amount of data, in particular from agronomic trials carried out at its experimental stations.
Would you like to apply for this job?
Send your cover letter and CV directly to Pierre-Etienne ALARY via this form. In addition, each candidate is asked to answer the following question: "Based on the Crop ontology guide, how would you break down an observation variable named "fresh matter of aerial parts of rapeseed in winter entry/m²" into trait (=title+attribute) x method x unit? Explain your choices.

In the digital age, Terres Inovia is called upon to manage an ever-increasing amount of data, particularly data from agronomic trials conducted by its experimental stations. The institute has structured its data management and valorization actions within its Data fi Numérique program. As part of this program, the Data and Digital Innovation Department is recruiting an intern to design and deploy a repository of variables essential to the homogenization and centralization of experimental data in a FAIR spirit.
Job presentation
As part of the implementation of its data governance and a policy of managing and disseminating its reference data, Terres Inovia wishes to deploy centralized management of its variables, particularly those used in experimentation. This work is part of the CASDAR Star project and a partnership that includes INRAe (UMR MISTEA in Montpellier) and the Institut Français de la Vigne et du Vin (IFV).
Job duties
- Creating and disseminating a standard to standardize variable names and content internally is a major challenge that could benefit recurring subjects such as the evaluation of varieties, crop protection products and agronomic levers. Our approach is to draw inspiration from existing tools and resources (Crop Ontology [3]), retaining and deploying only those elements that are useful and relevant for operational application within the Institute. Web semantic approaches and tools are very interesting for moving towards optimal knowledge management, but at the same time they have limitations that may hinder their adoption.
- Compare existing variable models with the variables currently mobilized by our tools, then translate our variables into the chosen model to eventually create a thesaurus, as defined in the CASDAR STAR project presentation publication.
The deliverables of the internship may be published via the project's HAL portal.
Profile required
- Bachelor's degree (Bac +4 or +5) from an engineering school or university in agronomy.
- Aptitude for data science and IT.
- You like to take the initiative and make proposals.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Conditions and benefits
- Basic knowledge of agronomy
- Basic knowledge of the R programming language
- Organization, rigor, precision and writing skills
- Written comprehension of English
- Ability to abstract
