The Issues

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth, but its unbalanced use in agricultural systems can degrade water and air quality and contribute to climate change. Nitrogen fertilization is the leading source of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions on farms in the region. The need to manage it effectively is a major regional priority in order to address economic, climate, and environmental challenges.

The objectives

The goal of the project is to maximize the efficiency of nitrogen fertilization for field crops in the Grand Est region through an innovative approach, in the context of climate change, in order to improve the technical and economic performance of crops and reduce the environmental impacts of nitrogen fertilization (energy consumption, GHG emissions, nitrogen losses to water and air).

Expected results

• The development of regional guidelines on innovative nitrogen fertilization practices and approaches, and their dissemination to agricultural advisors and
farmers• The integration of recommendations on nitrogen fertilization management into agricultural advisory services to guide farmers’ strategic decisions, drawing on a unique, multi-stakeholder regional monitoring
system•    The transfer and widespread adoption of best practices through a network of nitrogen-efficient
demonstration farms
