Over the past thirty years or so, rapeseed has gradually become one of the most important crops in rotation. For several years now, it has regularly reached and surpassed the 1.5 million hectares cultivated mark, making France Europe's leading producer in terms of surface area.
This first reference work summarizes our knowledge of the plant, its cultivation and processing, and presents :
- an overview, past and present, of the crop and its markets in France, Europe and worldwide
- aspects of plant functioning in interaction with its environment, the potential of the species, and the history and challenges of plant breeding
- practical aspects of crop management, its place in the rotation, planting, fertilization, crop protection and harvesting, with information on specific practices, including seed production and organic systems;
- a few considerations on the concept of sustainability as applied to rapeseed, a decisive factor for this crop and its main outlet, biodiesel, which is sometimes the subject of controversy
- the quality of French collection, seed conservation, processing, multiple uses in food, feed and non-food applications, not forgetting a few reminders of the analysis methods to be used.
