Wakil XL: 120-day exemption on spring protein crops accepted
WAKIL XL, the only seed treatment registered in 2020 on protein crops, is a fungicidal seed treatment. Approved for use on peas, faba beans and lupins, it controls mildew, ascochytosis and anthracnose, seed-borne diseases, as well as damping-off. WAKIL XL is composed of 10% cymoxanil, 5% fludioxonil and 16.96% metalaxyl-M.
The active substance "metalaxyl-M" has been re-approved in Europe for 15 years, but the use of seeds protected with this substance is restricted only in the greenhouse since June 1, 2021.
Sowing in the field of seeds protected with metalaxyl-M (product WAKIL XL) is therefore no longer possible after this date. Additional studies are under instruction at EFSA (the European evaluation agency) in order to lift these restrictions.
In the meantime, Terres Inovia, like other sectors, has submitted a request for a 120 days derogation, according to art53 of regulation 1107/2009. It concerns pea, faba bean and lupin which will be sown in spring.
This request for a 120 days derogation has been accepted on November 08th 2021. It extends the previous derogation (September 15 to January 13) covering the use for crops sown in the fall. This new waiver is valid from December 15 to April 14, 2022.

What diseases does Wakil XL protect against?
Downy mildew (Peronospora viciae for faba bean, Peronospora pisi for pea) is the main reason for this protection on pea and faba bean because in case of strong attack at the beginning of the cycle, its harmfulness can be important and there is no curative solution.
Wakil XL also protects against some aerial diseases whose main source of primary inoculum is the seed: anthracnose of lupin (Colletotrichum lupini), frequent and harmful, and ascochytosis of faba bean (Ascochyta fabae, not to be confused with botrytis due to Botrytis fabae), which is not very frequent but can be harmful in some cases.
Finally, this seed treatment allows to fight against seedlings melting and some early root necrosis on pea, faba bean or lupin. These diseases can be caused by different pathogens present in the soil (Pythium sp., Rhizoctonia, Fusarium sp.).
