What actions for sunflower in 2022?

27 Jan 2022

To boost sunflower cultivation, Terres Inovia had launched, in 2020, a vast program of actions and communication in the field with producers and technicians to disseminate the recommendations of the institute's experts.

While many concrete operations have been carried out in two years (see box), the year 2022 will be devoted to innovation around this crop "Showing technical and genetic innovations that benefit sunflower is an issue identified during surveys conducted with producers in 2019 and 2020," explains Claire Martin-Monjaret, head of the sunflower program at Terres Inovia. The 2022 action plan will be broken down into 4 areas:

New for sunflower management

Work initiated a few years ago is now bearing fruit, allowing a transfer of expertise to the field on key points of the technical itinerary, such as planting, bird control, weed control, fertilization and harvesting.

Innovative and adapted genetics

The results of the OPTIMildiou project will enable us to continue to support producers in the fight against this disease.

The contribution of sunflower to protein autonomy

The protein richness of the plant will be enhanced by exploring the specific management of HiPro sunflowers.

Digital tools to support farmers

The Teo action plan will support producers through simple technical tools. After Tour de Plaine, a calculator of recommended sowing densities, maps of harvest dates according to sowing and varietal earliness, and finally, a tool to support economic calculations to estimate the profitability of sunflower will be launched in 2022.

Two years of concrete actions

- 50 events in the classroom or in the field with operational players;
- A new decision-making tool: Tour de plaine
- About 20 webinars and technical meetings;
- More than 25 videos online on our You Tube channel, and, in 2021, an animated series of three educational videos;
- More than 400 press articles on a national or regional scale (Arvalis Terres Inovia Infos, Perspectives Agricoles, Presse Agricole Départementale...), and an exclusive partnership with Terre Net ;
- A distance learning course dedicated to sunflower in nine modules, Sunlive.
