The thesis on the pressing of oil seeds which will be carried out with our new instrumented press in our workshops has started. This thesis on the experimental study and modeling of the processes involved in the mechanical production of vegetable oil will be carried out by our PhD student Florian Rousseau. This thesis project is also part of the Protein Plan, the Cap Protéines program, and the strategy of the Seed Processing and Valorization Department, which intends to make mechanical extraction a discipline of excellence at Terres Inovia.

This thesis on continuous oilseed pressing aims to address the following objectives:

  • Improve the understanding of the phenomena involved in pressing (compression, pressure generation, crushing, slippage, etc.)
  • To study the interactions between the pre-treatment (de-foiling, cooking) and the pressing
  • To advance on the modeling of the pressing process.

In addition, the current context of high demand for plant proteins for animal feed or for human food applications reinforces the interest of press cake from the processing of oilseeds such as rape or sunflower. The preservation of the quality of these proteins during the process and especially during cooking is therefore a challenge for the crushing industry.
