The end of W-SoLent: the support project for soya and lentil producers!

30 Jan 2024

Faced with growing consumer demand for local, GMO-free products, France is experiencing a shortfall in plant protein production.

This shortfall is particularly acute in the west of the country (Normandy, Brittany, Pays-de-Loire, New Aquitaine), a livestock farming region with a very rich agri-food economy, driving demand for the production of plant proteins for animal feed and human consumption, both organically and conventionally.

In this context, non-GMO French soya and lentils appear to be interesting alternatives, provided that the technical difficulties associated with their cultivation, particularly weed management, are overcome.

The W-SoLENT project was born of these observations.

What is the aim? To support soya and lentil growers, by developing technical itineraries to secure lentil and soya production in the different soil and climate conditions of the West of France, in order to guarantee manufacturers a local and sustainable supply.

This 4-year project (2020-2023) was coordinated by Terres Inovia and funded by FranceAgriMer. It brought together the regional chambers of agriculture (Brittany, Pays de la Loire, New Aquitaine), the departmental chambers of agriculture (Charente, Charente-Maritime, Dordogne, Vienne), as well as cooperatives and traders (Groupe D'aucy, CAVAC, SAS AGRONAT, Coopérative de Creully, Eureden).

W-SoLent: the end of the project and the sharing of knowledge!

► 1st area of work in the project: Proposing controlled technical itineraries adapted to the soil and climate conditions to secure the production of soya and lentil crops in organic and conventional farming;

Our webinar on 1 February 2024 (13:30-14:00) will provide you with the answers you need : W-SoLENT: improving technical itineraries for lentils and soya

► Project workstream 2: Provide growers with a toolbox and management strategies (from sowing to harvesting) to ensure good weed control in organic and conventional farming.
